The food and beverage scene in “do or die” Bed-Stuy has come a long way. Although some parts are still rough around the edges, this historic neighborhood (known for its proud community of African-American homeowners, beautiful brownstones and churches, and the bustling Fulton Street business corridor) is evolving, and more than a few new bars have opened. Here are six of the area’s most popular watering holes.

Bed-Vyne Brew
Located on Tompkins and Putnam, the black-owned Bed-Vyne Brew features 10 taps of rare craft beer and wine to sip inside the reclaimed wood space, and growlers to gulp and go. A spin-off of Bed-Vyne Wine, the boutique wine shop located next door, Bed-Vyne Brew comes alive with live DJ sets and happy hour from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Lively up yourself at Lovers Rock, an intimate reggae bar also on Tompkins Avenue known for potent tropical potions like the “Breezy Night” made with dark rum, bitters and coconut ice. In warm weather, the backyard is a great spot to chill on a painted picnic bench with friends, island-inspired libations, and light bites like coco bread and beef, cheese and veggie patties.

Beast of Bourbon
For barbecue, booze and blues, you can’t beat the massive Big Easy-reminiscent Beast of Bourbon. The selection of 200 varieties of whisky, 40 beers on tap, live music, down home grub (ribs, pulled pork, mac and cheese), weekly specials like Taco Tuesday, and an indoor beer garden keep patrons coming back for more.

Grown and sexy regulars at Vodou Bar love the daily happy hour from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with specials on spirits and small plates like $4 sangria and $5 Vodou wings. This cozy neighborhood spot features a well-stocked wine and cocktail list, and an extensive menu that includes cheese pairings, brunch and decadent desserts.

Doris | Elizabeth M. via Foursquare

Accented by hanging macramé planters, fiber art and Bodega candles, Doris brings a vintage, Southwestern vibe to the Stuy. DJs spin vinyl and the kitchen cranks out artisanal grilled cheese. The kitschy drink list features specialty cocktails like the “Gold Tooth” (Pierde Almas mezcal, bitters and simple syrup), micheladas and a smart selection of red, white and sparking wines. There’s an all-night happy hour on Tuesdays, and a back patio, mostly occupied by smokers.
