Brooklyn Heights is considered “New York’s first suburb,” as it was a popular commuter town in the early 19th century when a steam ferry service started shuttling residents to Wall Street. Over 600 pre-Civil War houses and rows of well-kept brownstones still stand, giving the area a historic, neighborly feel. (You won’t find any skyscrapers in Brooklyn Heights.) Just west of the quaint residential blocks, the neighborhood boasts a long promenade, with views of Lower Manhattan, and a popular waterfront park. Spend an afternoon wandering the side streets and it’s obvious this neighborhood just about epitomizes the image of Brownstone Brooklyn.
