May 17 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Horned helmet season is nearly upon us. The Scandinavian East Coast Museum’s 2014 Viking Fest is scheduled from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, May 17 at Owl’s Head (a/k/a Bliss) Park, at 68th Street and Narrows Avenue in Bay Ridge. This year’s event, starting two hours earlier than last year, will feature the familiar Viking Village under the trees from 10:00 AM to Noon, including a visit from half-size Viking ship replica Norseman and crew and Medieval crafts and arms displays by the Society for Creative Anachronism and Historic Arms. (These exhibits will continue throughout the event.) Families are encouraged to become Vikings for a day by picking up a Viking Treasure Trove Map and finding the answers to the questions on the map. The winner will receive a Viking tattoo. Back this year is “Touched by the Vikings”: music and dance performance from world cultures with a Viking connection. American performers include Clann Eirann Pipers, The Donny Golden School of Step Dance, accordianist Ellen Lindstrom of the Swedish Meatballs, and Young Dancers in Repertory. Also featured are Norwegian guests, including accordian band Sandnes Trekkspill Orkester and folk dancers Sandnes Folkedanslag from the town of Sandnes; and traditional musicians from Maya’s School of Performing Arts, playing traditional Norwegian music, including Eli Storbekken, vocals, munnharpe and willow flute; Maya Osthassel, guitar, keyboards and harp; and Mary Barthlemeny, wooden flute, fiddle, ram’s horn and Lur. Topping off the afternoon will be children’s rides, homemade Norwegian food and local Norwegian crafts. Council Member Vinnie Gentile, the Norwegian Consulate in New York, the 17th of May Committee, and the Bay Ridge Baptist Church co-sponsor.
